Springtime in the vines: the first signs of growth

WHAT'S NEW!

Well spring has definitely sprung here at Beckels Vineyard, located in the picturesque Broke Fordwich wine region of the Hunter Valley. Bud burst has arrived a bit earlier than last year with all varietals, both red and white, awake and on their way for 2025 vintage.

With the cooler weather now behind us and our wine cellars a bit lighter after winter hibernation, now is the time to restock and what better time to do than with a SALE. Beckels Vineyard is excited to announce we are having a SPRING SALE with 15% OFF STOREWIDE* (limited time only) on now.

With all this warm weather, why not try our first vintage 2024 Fiano (Italian white wine - absolutely delicious)? It is also the best time for BUBBLES (well anytime is really), so try our 2022 Sparkling Chardonnay Traditional Method - such a crowd pleaser one glass is never enough.

We have just also released our 2023 Shiraz - earthy sweet spice fills the bouquet, ripe red cherries, plum, and wild berry dominate the palate, a divine drop.

To purchase any wines simply head to our Wine Shop on our website.

If you are enjoying Beckels wines why not become a member and join one of our customisable Wine Clubs (6 packs or 12 packs) offering discounted prices for members ALL THE TIME, it is so simple to join and use.

VINEYARD NEWS

So winter didn't provide too many frosts thank goodness, and although my garden at the property is now very hardy, I have learnt by trial and error what survives frost and what doesn't over the past few years, and this winter has most definitely been mild (no losses, phew).

All vines over the winter have been meticulously pruned by Ian and I, taking approximately 2 to 3 hours per row, leaving only two buds per spur to produce less yield but better quality fruit and therefore better quality wine.

We have had bud burst early this season for all varietals, both red & white. Soon the vines will be flowering and producing clusters of flowers. Each cluster of flowers will become a bunch of grapes, with each individual flower needing to be pollinated to become a grape. Once the flower becomes pollinated, it starts to grow seeds and begins to swell. It has then become a grape.

FUN FACT - Did you know that unlike other plants, grape vines are self pollinating and don't require the assistance of insects to pollinate?

The vines can grow so quickly, up to 20cm a day, so we are constantly keeping an eye on them and looking out to prevent any environmental factors that may affect them (weather, pests & disease). There is always something to be done here at Beckels Vineyard.
